Whispers in the Woods
The forest behind Leo's house was forbidden. The older people in the village called it the "Whispering Woods." They said the trees could talk and the paths would change to lead travelers astray. But for Leo and his best friend, Sam, the warnings only made the forest more interesting.
One cool autumn afternoon, they decided to go past the old stone wall that marked the boundary. The air inside felt colder, and the sunlight filtered through the leaves in spots. "It's just a normal forest," Sam said, though his voice wavered and he looked nervous.
As they walked deeper, it became very quiet. Then, they heard it—a soft, rhythmic sound like whispering voices. "Turn back," the wind seemed to say. "Protect the heart." Leo stopped. He saw a huge oak tree with roots that twisted around a glowing green stone embedded in the ground.
"Look!" Leo whispered. As he reached out to touch the stone, the whispers got louder. They didn't sound angry, but urgent. A small creature made of twigs and leaves stepped out from behind the tree. It was a guardian of the forest.
"The heart of the forest is weak," the creature said, its voice sounding like dry leaves. "The water that feeds these roots is blocked." Leo and Sam realized the "whispers" were asking for help. They spent the afternoon clearing the debris from the nearby stream. They watched as the water flowed again and the stone's glow intensified. They promised to keep the forest's secret, knowing they were now its guardians too.
